Due to the popularity of Petanca on the Costa´s , a new league has been formed  The International Petanca League. The Aim is  to encourage the sport in the community and play friendly enjoyable competitive Petanca .
 
  
 The game began  in Southern France, Marseilles ,in 1907.There are various stories on how it came about, one tells that a young frenchmen was disabled and could not walk  just forlornly looked on while his brother played Boules (players run up and rolls a ball)  This  bothered the abled body brother and he decided on a variation of the game whereby a player stands still and throws ... petanca was invented ..the word  means feet anchored.
 
  
 The game has  grown to such an extent that it is played all over the world, and like many other sports there is a world cup and European tournements.  
 
  
 In France there are over 17 million players , this compares to 3000 in the U.K.and  Soon like here in the Costa´s you will probably hear a cultured  accent eating a bacon bougette with a glass of plonk sitting by a Piste in Pontefract, Bolton or Surbiton.
