# Wind Farms for Cape Verde

<p style="text-align: center;">  </p> <h1>Cape Verde wind farms start construction</h1> <p>07 July 2011</p> <h2 class="article-intro">Cape Verde has seen the erection of the first wind turbines at the Cabeolica wind farm project, as part of a commercial-scale public private partnership (PPP) wind farm development in Sub-Saharan Africa.</h2> <div class="article-content"> <p><em>By Renewable Energy Focus staff</em></p> <p>The four wind farms are expected to enter operation in October. When completed, the wind farms could produce up to 100 GWh a year.</p> <p>A spokesperson tells <em>Renewable Energy Focus</em> that the wind farms will be powered by <a href="http://www.vestas.com/" target="_blank">Vestas </a><em>V52 </em>850 kW wind turbines totalling 25.5 MW.</p> <p>The <em>Cabeolica </em>wind power project has been developed by <a href="http://www.infracoafrica.com/" target="_blank">InfraCo Africa</a>, and consists of four wind farms across the largest islands of Cape Verde.</p> <p>&ldquo;Projects like Cabeolica are key to meeting Africa&rsquo;s energy needs, securing economic growth and reducing poverty,&rdquo; says Keith Palmer, Chairman of InfraCo. &ldquo;Cape Verde is also one of the only places in the world where Government subsidies will not be needed to make the project economically viable. &ldquo;</p> <p>The &euro;60 million project was developed and part funded by InfraCo Africa as a public-private partnership with the Government of Cape Verde and the national power utility company, <em>Electra</em>.</p> <p>The remaining equity came from <em>Finnish Fund for Foreign Investment </em>(FinnFund) and <a href="http://www.africafc.org/" target="_blank">Africa Finance Corporation</a> (AFC).
