The four wind farms are expected to enter operation in October. When completed, the wind farms could produce up to 100 GWh a year.
A spokesperson tells Renewable Energy Focus that the wind farms will be powered by Vestas V52 850 kW wind turbines totalling 25.5 MW.
The Cabeolica wind power project has been developed by InfraCo Africa, and consists of four wind farms across the largest islands of Cape Verde.
“Projects like Cabeolica are key to meeting Africa’s energy needs, securing economic growth and reducing poverty,” says Keith Palmer, Chairman of InfraCo. “Cape Verde is also one of the only places in the world where Government subsidies will not be needed to make the project economically viable. “
The €60 million project was developed and part funded by InfraCo Africa as a public-private partnership with the Government of Cape Verde and the national power utility company, Electra.
The remaining equity came from Finnish Fund for Foreign Investment (FinnFund) and Africa Finance Corporation (AFC). The African Development Bank also provided around €45m in debt financing.
