Puerto Banús opened west of Marbella in 1970 as a planned marina and leisure district. Its white arcades, enclosed harbour and mountain backdrop created an instantly recognisable image which has been repeated in advertising ever since. The place is private-facing in style but connected to a longer public coastline.
Developer José Banús worked with architect Noldi Schreck on a low-rise Andalusian vocabulary around berths for large yachts. The result is not an old fishing village, even when its lanes borrow balconies, tiles and white walls from regional architecture.
The marina belonged to the rapid remaking of the Costa del Sol through tourism, property development and international leisure. Reading it in that context is more revealing than a list of famous visitors. Marbella's older centre and fishing history sit elsewhere and should not be folded into the marina's origin story.
The useful public experience is spatial: harbour mouth, breakwaters, beaches and the relationship with La Concha mountain. Continue along signed coastal routes where access permits. Do not enter pontoons or security-controlled areas simply because a yacht is visible.
Road congestion and parking pressure are part of the modern marina. Check current Marbella bus information or use a licensed taxi. If driving, use signed parking and never leave belongings visible in the vehicle. Restaurant, club and shop recommendations age quickly and are omitted here.
