Don, Seeing that you asked me a direct question, I feel that you deserve an answer. Personally I do not subscribe to avoiding taxes. Neither do I buy the bootleg DVD's or CD's or the fake designer goods, as I believe that I would be subscribing to suspect activities. When I see cars that have no ITV or paid up Suma, I am annoyed. 
 If a person decides to work on a cash in hand basis, then it is up to the individuals to declare their earnings to the Hacienda. There are heavy penalties for those who are caught out and I know that the Hacienda are seeking out all those individuals who do not pay into the system. Whenever I require a tradesman , such as a mechanic, plumber or electrician, I try to ensure that they have a CIF number.
 The problem of tax evasion is so bad that the Tax Office are now trying to get persons to report those who are not paying their taxes.
 In case anyone asks...yes I am paying tax on my Council Salary.
