New Bar opening?

Hi, my name is Jenny Williams and my partner is Marie. We have rented for the past 2 years in Guadarmar and haven now decided to open a new business (bar) I know what you are all going to say! We have been looking around the Urb La Marina area and seen a few that are for sale and looked at some that only require up front rents to open. Now, our new bar would be for everyone. But I would like all to know that we are looking to open a gay bar. There are many gay people here on the Costa Blanca who would like to enjoy a friendly bar where they do not feel unwanted or victimised, but welcomed. All comments would be gratefully received. p.s. Can anyone inform me of who owns Poppy's? Thankyou.

La Marina

Poppy's is closed down,..so I guess you would have to speak to the landlord of the consum area,..if you pop into possibly the Debra charity shop i'm sure they would be able to provide you with a number for said landlord.
Although i'm not gay it can only be good for new businesses to be opening up oin the URB.
Best of luck.

I wish you luck 2cute4u. I'd advise looking at your potential client base in La Marina.

Wow! A gay bar on the urb huh? Sounds interesting!
I'd certainly love to see this happen!
I wish you all the best, and I can't wait to see what happens!

Why not call it a gay friendly bar......... that way its open to everyone but people know what to expect..... I don't know why we have to have set bars just because we are gay.

Bet people who live near Poppies will love the idea

Marko, fancy getting your 6 inch fuse nails out and help me wire them up

Commented electrons in Elche 2013-08-21 09:15:24 UTC

2Cute4U - I think you will have a lot of work to do in Poppies to get it up and running, from what I gather everything was taken out. Including the sinks, etc. So have just a shell. Ask at one of the other bars who the landlord is if you are still interested.
Although I am not gay I do think if you do go for Poppies, you will have problems with those that are anti causing you problems and feel you should have perhaps just said you were opening a bar, then once opened put the word around by word of mouth in the gay community. That way you would not get the anti knockers kicking up and causing you problems before you have even started. I wish you Good Luck anyway where ever you choose to open!

Hi and thank you for the comments. It is not a problem refitting any property. Both of us popped up to La Marina to view other bars and found that there are a lot for sale????? Any reason for this. Final Whistle, Aloa Bar,(next door). Temptations in the opposite corner and a couple of empty units. After asking the people in the computer shop (Infomatica) They are moving so is there any reason what is going on here? We also viewed some property units in the village which seemed OK but you really have to look to find them. What surprises us is there is not a lot of smiles when one walks into a bar....Also, why do you not get served outside by staff? I appreciate if there is only one person on duty, but where we normally frequent, there is always someone to say good day, afternoon or evening. Anyway, not here to discuss staffing or attitudes. We did like the bar/cafe up by Supervalue near the police station. It is on it's own island. When we inquired next door they said it was Tio Pepe. (Possible)

Hi geoell53, I was married once, enough said. Problems?? All my life I have had problems. We both know a hell of a lot of people! As they say " It's not what you know, It's who you know". We have an extremely large following of friends and would look forward to meeting new friends on the Urb. It is surprising how many biker friends we have (straight & gay). Problems. We don't think so. I have always said. " Live and let live". If you have nothing nice to say about me, then don't say it at all until you know me. We both do a lot for our communities, helping unfortunate elderly and invalid european people here in Spain. We both want to live life our way and have fun with EVERYBODY. It is funny to see that clients who post on forums always say " I'm not GAY" we don't care. We give respect and we hope to receive it back. Our business would not have a sign up saying GAY bar only GAYS allowed. It would be open for everyone, you would be amazed how much enjoyment and friendliness there are in the alternative scene. We are not here to change anyone's outlook on life or, to change their preferences. But, we are not here to defend our business interests. When you see a business gap in the market that needs to be addressed. It is worth fulfilling that need.

On a more serious note, if you read back on this forum it "looks like" not many of the Bars around Poppies have the correct opening licences, sound proofing and music licences etc, basically just do your homework first.

I also have gay friends here in La Marina & in the UK, as well as family members and ex work colleagues, so it doesn't bother me one bit. It was meant sincerely, so no offence meant. I am pleased that you both will be able to cope if there is are any problems with those that are anti. I also commend what you & your biker friends do for the community. I am aware of their good work. Well done! The main reason I wrote in reply to your thread was basically to inform you about the state of Poppies and to wish you luck in finding somewhere and hope it goes well.

Can someone explain to me what a gay bar is?
Is it just for gay people?

There are many gay (Homosexual or lesbian) pensioners in La Marina male & female who use the same bars as all pensioners & youngsters do, and they are respected by their friends no matter what. Although there are a very small majority of small minded people & yobs who would cause trouble for a "Gay bar". I don't understand and cant get my head round the fact that the "GAY" word was specifically mentioned in 2Cute4U thread & mentioned she wanted a bar where her clientele would not be victimised. When I showed concern about the area she was looking at. She got very verbal, because I stated I wasn't "GAY". That is why I said it would have been better perhaps to just say you were thinking of opening a bar, then it would go round by word of mouth in the gay network. I am beginning to think its her that has the problem not the residents of La Marina. This is after all 2013 & not the dark ages.

I am confused as to what a gay bar is, maybe its my age, I know what a gay is but why would you have a bar just for gay people and what do they do there?

In a sports bar they have sports, in a Tapas bar they have Spanish food, but I can only think of one thing that people would do in a place they decided to call a gay bar, I am sure this can not be right so could someone help an old lady out please.

Linda Bailey Oh dear, a gay bar is mostly a gay friendly bar where you can go if your gay or straight as long as you hold no prejudice so the likes of Terry wouldn't & shouldn't go to.

daviesetz,
Could it be that gays do not walk around with G A Y painted on there foreheads. As for the ones I know or have known, they are normal regular people, and like most heterosexuals, dont flaunt their sexuality So it is possible that La Marina have some of different age groups as well as different sexes

Buster Bradley Think you mean prejudice. I think gay friendly sounds so much better. It does not matter who goes in then, people can feel welcome, wether it be gay/ straight/ bi/ transvestite/ transexual/ alternative life stylers/ bears/ cubbs/ queens/ chubbs. etc etc

Buster Bradley There was a gay bar in Torrevieja called the pink moby. It closed down. It was a cosy little place to chil, read a book, watch the comedies they put on the TV. It was not seedy and no dark rooms. People liked it for the atmosphere.

John Clayton Great idea, but I would ask why all the closed down bars failed. I think the truthful answer will be location, location and location. You need guaranteed footfall but properties with that will attract higher rental. Put it another way, no matter how go...See More

Mary Middleton wish you loads of luck but its a difficult time to be opening a any business. If you are committed to doing this my advice would be spend a little as possible when you begin. We took a run down place in Scotland a few years ago. we did make a go of it ...See More

Richard Stuart Ward Where ever we go we dont feel victimised. Spain seems chilled about being gay. I would open a gay friendly bar but be aware that the winter out here is very tough. Ask any bar owner!

Linda Bailey People like Terry are the kind of people that make me ashamed of the human race! What a dick! Ps. Opening a gay bar sounds great but licenses for entertainment etc have become so strict that it makes it near on impossible to keep up.

Henry
They are taking them straight off there Facebook page, and you are dead right, it is muddly, and will get hundreds of new one only repliers, who wont understand that the original thread appeared
on The Spanish Life and partly or wholly transferred to the Face Book page and when comments made on Face book these are transferred wholly or in part onto Spanish Life La Marina. I guess they hope that more people will look at the Spanish Life Forum web-site. Hope it works for them, like you, it doesn't work for me.
