CAMBALACHE RESTAURANT, Benimar, Facing the road to Rojales

We went lunchtime on 5th April. INSIDE is lovely though the tables are tightly packed in. High backed suede chairs. Good wood tables with beautiful runner cloths, just looked great. They've a Spanish website, it has nothing on it really but they've just opened so maybe it'll become better in time. You get soup first, it was a carrot & something else, a spicy one served with bread, we liked that! I ordered crab salad which came with breadsticks but it was only crabSTICKS & not much of that but very nice all the same. My husband ordered an Argentian pastry (we shared these dishes) & it was really different with a minced meat & mint filling. I felt a dip would have made it less dry but it was one I'd have again.

My husband ordered the 'fish in sauce', he got panga covered with a Roquefort sauce, unusual choice of sauce & he had never thought to ask what 'sauce' it would be. Having said that he would've still had it, I think. I chose chicken 'in sauce', after a long chat with the waitress who said I could have leg or breast when I said if it was leg I wouldn't have it. When I asked about the sauce she tried to explain it was tomato with something she had forgotten the English for. (It actually was a tasty tomato sauce with onions & petit pois, lots of petit pois TOO!)

When these mains arrived mine was a leg! Seeing as I'd had this lengthy chat about wanting breast NOT LEG, I commented on it & the woman serving us replaced it with a huge breast. There was lots of chips. Those served to my husband & those served on my first meal were not as crispy as they should've been & I HAD asked for them to be very crispy when I ordered them & that had confused her. She said 'Crispy???' I couldn't explain, not speaking Spanish so, in desperation, I said 'mas horno??!!' (realising I should learn some basic Spanish) & she suddenly knew what I meant as she said 'ah, more done!' My husband was halfway through his meal by the time mine was returned though he obviously was taking his time & the chips on mine were definitely crispy & there were so many so I gave him half. I also gave him some chicken breast, it was massive. I never knew chickens in Spain grew that large! ;-)

We followed it with a very good chocolate mousse with the usual spray cream. We were served coffee too included in the 8€. We'd ordered two glasses of red wine .. which I drank .. & my husband needed a non alcoholic drink himself but when he looked at the menu it had 200ml water 1.20€ but we saw Fanta was 1.40€. Usually restaurants serve a 330ml can so he chose Fanta lemon. Sadly it actually came in a 200ml bottle & water at the adjacent table was actually served in a 330ml bottle. Well, we'll know for another time. 8€ each plus the 1.40€ for the Fanta. It is 8€ evenings too & we would rather sit inside, outside was nothing special with the usual plastic chairs & tables but there were two sofas so you could sit there for coffee but beware, the seats are like rocks.

Altogether it was fine, we would certainly return. The young woman who served us was very pleasant too. Give Cambalache a try.

We went here a few weeks ago too, one Saturday evening with friends. The place is lovely and the staff were very friendly and accomodating. I speak some Spanish so we found it easier although the lady serving us spoke good English too. I had pizza which was lovely, my friend had a salmon steak in a sauce and the two hubbys had steak - unfortunately, both had to send them back as they were a little too rare for their liking!! When they returned they were then a little too well done but were nice big steaks and tasty. We had a couple of jugs of sangria and the men had beers. Our bill was just over 100€ which we thought was quite expensive but it was overall very nice. Might try the Menus del Dia/Noche next time!
