Retiring In Spain

Hi everyone my name is Maureen my husband is Michael. We are in the Uk preparing to move to Spain to retire. Thought we would rent for six months so we can check out places. We recently had a shock when a friend of ours died in Spain and his wife had to pay 50% death duty tax. This really alarmed us as we looked on advice blogs and sales and this has been kept a big secret...my friend had to sell and come back to the uk. Why does no one advise about this?

I retired to Spain in 2013 after my darling wife had passed away. I decided to rent and after six months it was clear that renting was a perfect option for me. I invested my money in the UK and now have the best of both worlds, visiting the UK on regular visits to see my kids and grandchildren and living in a climate with 300 days of sun. You can rent a small 3 bedroom 2 bathroom villa, nicely furnished for as little as €400 per month. My investments in the UK pay for that in interest. Prices here in Spain for buying are still very unstable so I would advise to rent long term. Life here is great and much cheaper than the UK>
