Burkha ban is back in Lleida following ECHR ruling over France

A BAN on wearing burkhas or niqabs in public places is set to return in the province of Lleida in Catalunya following a European court verdict supporting a blanket prohibition in France.

Pioneers in Spain for outlawing the burkha – which conceals the entire head and body leaving only the hands and a thin strip across the eyes uncovered – and the niqab, which covers the head and the lower part of the face, including the mouth, the town of La Paeria in Lleida did not go as far as France by banning them altogether but announced in 2010 that women were no longer able to wear them in public places such as council buildings or business premises.
"My own Opinion is that it just not acceptable in Public Places and should be banned"

Had an interesting experience in London a while back. We were carrying a larger type bag, and a cabin bag as we were on our way to the airport, but decided to have a look round Harrods on the way there. We were stopped at the door by a very stern looking gentleman and had to leave the bags in a designated spot before we could enter. Fair enough, we thought - thinking about the shoplifting that must go on in a place like that. Imagine my surprise when in the art and glass department there were several "ladies" walking around in black from head to foot and indeed it was impossible to discern the sex of them. Could have been anyone with any type of weapon, bomb, thievegoods.. underneath the robes! We have all seen the video of the terrorist who was being chased in London that ran into a mosque, and managed to sneak out with a robe and burkha right in front of their noses... Seems to me they should be checked as well, but no... not allowed to feel down muslim women.. Sorry this was meant to be an anecdote...but I'm just saying...

I read this post when it went up and thought that no-one would have the nerve to reply. As people seem to be so very very wary about this subject, I often think it must be me. Just the principle of them being allowed to wear there tribal disguise in Public goes 100% against the grain. I am very aware that, this type of disguised form of dressing frightens me beyond belief. Yet we all sit back on our hands and say nothing. I luckily more a less never come across them, but I know that my own personal instincts would kick into gear if someday I was forced to sit with one of them, being on a plane I was traveling on. Do we Westerners not have any rights left these days ourselves?
They say Live and let live but there is a limit!!!!!!!!!!!!! What they do in Private however is up to them.

Must admit Ive had that thought myself about sitting on a plane.. bad enough standing next to them in the metro...You are right - it is frightening and we shouldn't have to be frightened here in Europe in our own countries especially. And the trouble with people these days is that they just swallow everything - no-one dares stand up and say what they all are thinking any more..Except perhaps Mr. Farage, LOL!

I don't know who Mr. Farage is but I know that France is banning burqas and niqabs in official places. That is good! If they want to hide their faces at home it´s up to them. But how fun can that be?

Nigel Farage is the leader of the new party UKIP in UK. No more immigrants on the agenda big time! doing quite well In the polls too by all accounts - right up there behind David Cameron, who has always hedged his bets in that respect.

alison,
Let's hope UKIP's ideas doesn't spread to more countries in Europe. What would happen to all of us immigrants coming from other EU-countries living in Spain if the same kind of party would rule the Government here. Never thought about that? Or maybe you don't live in Spain so it doesn't bother you.

I do live in Spain, yes...

alison,
silly of me. I didn't think you could be a Spanish citizen. Or a former immigrant and now a Spanish citizen and not just an immigrant. I forgot those possibilities. Sorry if I offended you!
