EU Referendum

It's getting closer, so all you expats need to apply to get your voting forms.
I'm still not sure how leaving would affect me and you fellow expats.
Would our Pensions be frozen ?
Would our Health Care have to be paid by ourselves ?
There's lots of other things that could change if we leave, so I just wish it would be discussed more in the free press, then we could all vote the correct way.

For voting forms that take just a few minutes to apply for, go to
www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

From what I have seen and heard, Itseems that ex/pats will lose the free health care and future rises in State Pensions If the UK pull out of the EU. But I cannot find anything about double taxation, which may be important to many ex/pats, as, at the moment we only pay tax on world wide earnings
to one country, I wonder if we will lose this right and have to pay double taxation, Any thoughts on this.

Commented Alan in La Marina 2016-02-21 11:55:11 UTC

I've heard that if we leave the EU all expats will spontaneously combust! Be careful what you listen to!!

Commented Norick in La Marina 2016-02-21 17:49:44 UTC

Look at the EEA agreement and Norway. Could become the same for the U.K.

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-02-21 23:06:13 UTC

The EU and Norway are still at the dating stage. The EU and UK are like some married couple considering divorce. It's not going to be pleasant if we vote to leave.

Commented chalkie in Quesada 2016-02-22 00:00:41 UTC

I thought you had jumped ship anyway,in which case,do you really care?

Commented blarter222 in La Marina 2016-02-22 10:55:51 UTC

chalkie,
from the Guardian: Cameron will focus on the “Norwegian option”, often cited by the Leave campaign, which has allowed Oslo to enjoy access to the single market without joining the EU.
“The prime minister believes it is important to highlight the questions Britain would face if it left the EU and followed Norway’s model,” a No 10 source said. Downing Street pointed out that Norway is the 10th largest contributor to the EU budget and is bound by the rules of the single market without any say in the decision-making process.

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-02-22 11:51:02 UTC

blarter222, I have a feeling you mean me,in your last comment,if so, i didnt jump ship, i went back to my homeland, and why shouldnt the EU decision have anything to do with me,after all over 50million Brits in the U.K. have a vote and only about one million in Spain, or are you hinting that only the ex/pats should have a vote, and the stay in country brits should keep quiet. or perhaps you are on about the comment of mine about double taxation, when the ex/ pats feel that the brits shouldnt hold opinions on them, that will be the day you would of lost the plot. I have decided my vote will assist the ex/pats, because i will vote to stay in the EU,but not for your benefit but for my younger family.

Commented Alan in La Marina 2016-02-22 12:59:14 UTC

The Guardian tends to have a dig at the conservatives whenever possible... Take heed of it with a pinch of slat.

Commented chalkie in Quesada 2016-02-22 21:02:18 UTC

Alan, far bit for me to even question the wisdom of the Oracle but, with you returning to your homeland, the question of ex pat rights won't affect you surely, because, now, you ain't one, right!!!!??

Commented blarter222 in La Marina 2016-02-25 10:18:53 UTC

The conservatives should always take it with a pinch of slat!!!!!!

Commented blarter222 in La Marina 2016-02-25 10:21:21 UTC

I've always found Alans comments well thought out and perfectly reasonable. As an Ex-Ex Pat who has returned home, I'm interested in his thoughts on the subject as he can see it from both points of view.

Commented chalkie in Quesada 2016-03-04 21:52:24 UTC

So have I,informative, productive and straight to the point.Sometimes a tad contravential but always entertaining, bordering on laugh out loud funny.

My point is,the changes,if any,if Brexit is successful will not directly affect him as he will no longer be a E.U.citizen.Simple.

Commented blarter222 in La Marina 2016-03-05 08:28:47 UTC

Thanks Chalkie, I may not be a regular to La Marina, But in the eight years of being a Tax Resident, have met and made Friends with many wonderful people, to whom I will always be grateful to, for all the help and support they gave me when my eyes started to play up and i had to give up driving. (hence a major reason for leaving La Marina). I can remember a while ago when Blarter wrote his first topic on this forum and was berated by a couple of comments made, by people who didnt wait to find out the the reason that he started the original topic. on that particular occasion blarter thanked me for supporting him. I found it a tad annoying that he had a pop at me for having the gall to put a comment on this forum, because now i am no longer a resident in Spain, According to him if the U,K, come out of the EU. It will not make an iota of difference to me.I cannopt see the logic in his comment,or does he really think that millionsf Brits living in the U.K. will have nothing to lose (or perhaps gain) by the U.K. leaving the E.U. The even sillier thing is that if had seen previous things i had written, albeit on other forums and newspapers, he could of read that I will be voting to stay in the E.U. although not to assist the ex pat community in Spain, but my belief at that time is that we may alienate ourselves for years to come by leaving at this moment.I could give many of my thoughts to yes and no to staying in the E.U. but I think I could even confuse myself if I tried that.

Commented Alan in La Marina 2016-03-05 12:33:00 UTC

Alan, having a pop at you is the last thing I meant to potray.Your comments have always been meat and drink to my sense of humour. You served up a feast of fun on many occasions and I am also grateful for your solo support on my first post, when the nasties came out of the drains.I was just stating a fact, that's all.If I mistakenly offended you, then please accept my sincere apologies

Commented harrykarry0 in La Marina 2016-06-21 18:20:51 UTC

I must admit I've read and re-read Reindeer's comment and I haven't the slightest clue what point is being made. Any chance of rephrasing it Reindeer?

Are you trying to highlight the double standards held by a very small minority of Ex-Pats who live permanently here in Spain?

If Britain isn't your country of birth, you may not realise that the UK press has no problem finding and interviewing individuals with views that hold no common-sense to the majority. These are the same "news"papers that had pictures of pensioners enjoying a wine and swim in mid-winter that helped get WFA curtailed.

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-06-25 06:31:21 UTC

Commented Paula in Quesada 2016-06-25 08:06:42 UTC

Reindeer Keeper ....it wasn't a sad day at all, well not for the people that voted to leave the EU. We like to think of it as a new challenge and it will be, there's no doubt about that.

Commented YorkshireLass in La Marina 2016-06-25 15:01:39 UTC

Got to say, well impressed with a comment chalkie made on this link Four months ago. When he mentioned about the EU and UK,Bieng like an old married couple, but if the UK vote OUT it wont be a pretty divorce. got to hand it to you Chalkie because just about every bit of publicity printed and stated in the last few days mentions the exact words that I first read FOUR MONTHS ago on your comment

Commented Alan in La Marina 2016-06-25 16:46:56 UTC

Paula and YorkshireLass,
fantastic comments from people living? in Spain.
You will be living in Spain under the same conditions as people from North Africa. I hope you will be satisfied with that.

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-06-25 19:46:56 UTC

There you go again Reindeer Keeper making assumptions, you assume I live in Spain? Not that it is any of your concern, I have a property in Spain, but I live in a beautiful place in England and before you assume that there's no such thing as a beautiful place in England,as my name suggests there most definitely is!

Commented YorkshireLass in La Marina 2016-06-26 06:41:54 UTC

I am British first and will always support the motherland regardless as to my personal losses

Commented Paula in Quesada 2016-06-26 07:05:53 UTC

welcome to the club. You assume I don't think there are beautiful places in England. And you are wrong. I know there are beautiful places in England. Hope this will satisfy you.

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-06-26 08:18:00 UTC

happy you.
Not a thought about coming problems for your countrymen living in Spain. But you are happy and that is a good thing for you!

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-06-26 08:24:10 UTC

Well Reindeer Keeper at least we agree on one thing! ☺

Commented YorkshireLass in La Marina 2016-06-26 08:43:10 UTC

And voting locally for the new Ayuntamiento will cease for British citizens. That is another consequence.

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-06-26 10:21:11 UTC

Did we stop and think of the problems our fellow countrymen would have when we marched to war in 1939? No we did what we had to do and in the true spirit of the British, we pulled together and got the job done, we will do it again now and be better off for it in the long run.

Commented Paula in Quesada 2016-06-26 12:44:47 UTC

Paula,
how can compare this new situation with the second world war? Shame on you!
I am glad you are not a typical British resident living in Spain. Maybe you do not even live in Spain?
And by the way nothing is clear yet with the British exit from the EU. It was a non-binding referendum that took place. Much can still happen.

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-06-26 15:59:19 UTC

I see we have a smart ass on the forum, so just for the one person that does not understand. No its nothing like the second world war, but that is a good example of the British spirit and how as a nation we get on with things.

As for the idea that the vote can be changed then think on, its not a game, out is out. Are you the sort of person that if you are not winning you take the ball home?

Commented Paula in Quesada 2016-06-26 16:16:58 UTC

Why get personal.(Smart Arse). To be fair the man is only relaying his concerns, which are,as I can see, are very valid. The out battle bus slogans promise of the £350Million.paid to the E.U.will effectively go to the N,H,S,has already been denied by,Farage and Ian Duncan Smith.Good start for the outs. How many more lies to come??Well if Boris the Buffoon gets his hands on the top job,him and Trump will cause chaos, then there's Gove, gods help us!!!!

Commented blarter222 in La Marina 2016-06-26 16:32:57 UTC

Yes if you have invested in Spain and are yourself an immigrant then look out as should the immigrants who now live in the U.K

Commented Paula in Quesada 2016-06-26 16:51:57 UTC

Commented blarter222 in La Marina 2016-06-27 06:54:32 UTC

I wasnt going to add more "he said ,she said" But I think rainbow got his idea of the referendum, result being just a test that may have no legal hold in practise, from an english speaking spanish free bee. So it must be true (ha ha) Just a bit of true reasoning,According to this local rag the House of Commons or Lords can hold a vote on if to accept the results of the referendum,as the vote itself was only a way of helping these two Houses make a final decision.
Just to put this absolute silly idea to bed, I would like to say that the majority of complaints from Brits against the EU is that the rules and laws are sorted by UNelected people.and therefore shouldnt be allowed. whereas the House of Lords is in fact made up of hundreds of Lords of the Realm, and guess what, They also are not elected. and that is where the arguement about it not being legal yet falls flat. I AM NOT SURE IF WHAT i HAVE WRITTEN IS TRUTH OR RUBBISH, But it makes sense to me.

Commented Alan in La Marina 2016-06-27 07:51:23 UTC

Commented blarter222 in La Marina 2016-06-27 09:19:17 UTC

But it is sad that a majority of the non Spanish people living in San Fulgencio will be excluded from voting in the local elections.

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-06-27 19:21:10 UTC

I'm afraid that's only a small consequence of the decision. I assume Spain will get less help from the UK portion of the EU pot and it doesn't take a genius to work out who's going to making up the shortfall.

I also fear it's going to turn the UK into a nasty, inward looking, racist country and once no-one can blame the EU for their woes, they'll pick on someone else (probably Muslims).

And if the EU was so undemocratic, how did Farage and his freeloading cronies get into it. Maybe the UK could have argued using debate and reason for the UK's interests instaed of getting that clown.

The UK is left with two political parties, virtually leaderless with it's majority of Mp's wanting to stay in and with the brexit lot skulking into the shadows.

Commented chalkie in Quesada 2016-07-07 22:23:55 UTC

Well put Chalkie, the people have voiced their opinion in the referendum. The referendum wasn't a binding referendum, it was a snap shot of the publics opinion of a moment in time to provide the government with the publics sentiment.

Next step is for the next PM to commence discussions with the EU. Upon conclusion of the discussions / negotiation the PM must then put the deal reached to parliament for the MP's to vote.

So you see it is the MP's who will have the final say on the matter, they will weight public opinion referendum results V's EU deal V's risk V's their own opinion.

Just as an interesting side note - 85% of parliamentary MP's across all parties voted to remain.

Conclusion : there is a lot more twists and turns yet to come. Nothing is never as it first seems.

Commented Rod in La Marina 2016-07-08 21:03:33 UTC

Commented blarter222 in La Marina 2016-07-09 07:42:29 UTC

I wonder what would happen if the negotiations drag on until the next general election and a party specifically said it wanted to remain within Europe? What fun it would be if it won..... There's hope yet........

Commented chalkie in Quesada 2016-07-09 13:14:56 UTC

I wouldn't rule it out Chalkie but considering the next GE is 4 years off,it's probably unlikely. Unless a call for an earlier GE got momentum as the incumbent PM wasn't voted in by the public.

The Lib Dems have already said they won't trigger article 50 if they were in government and that we would remain in the EU.

Commented Rod in La Marina 2016-07-09 14:04:47 UTC

Ah Blarter What a hypocrite. Your comment." Why get personal.(Smart Arse)." Yet you have the temerity to label "Boris the Buffoon"
Grow a pair will you. Isn't it obvious to you which country wants to rule Europe? Its not a British trait to bow and scrape to the current wolf in sheep's clothing tyrant. Start talking Brexit up the future will be better for the younger generation.

Commented dynosore in San Fulgencio 2016-07-20 17:24:59 UTC

I don't think Russia wants to lead Europe...... If Brexit is so good, it wouldn't need talking up. 'Brexiters' have had 40 years of moaning about Europe, at least give the Remainers a couple of months to get used to the idea. As for Boris, he didn't show much fight to gain leadership of the Conservatives. What would he have been like leading the country, especially if Donald gets in? 'Buffoon' seems polite.

It's that big bit of land attached to Great Britain by a couple of tunnels.

Commented chalkie in Quesada 2016-07-24 00:37:52 UTC

OK,you got me Dynosore, however he is still a Buffoon, who threw his considerable weight behind, anyone, everyone, who who would champion his desperate desire for power, regardless of any loyalty to anyone. The latest value of the pound, manufacturing and service industry results show that the country that does not bow and scrape is possibly heading for another recesson.I will ignore the grow a pair comment, you obviously don't know me.

Commented blarter222 in La Marina 2016-07-24 06:39:30 UTC

Chalkie,
thank you for your information. And, if you did not know, Great Britain is the largest island of Europe and the ninth-largest in the world. So in your oppinion Europe is attached to the ninth largest island in the world. An interesting thought.

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-07-24 09:44:28 UTC

I think you need to get out more if you find that interesting.

Commented chalkie in Quesada 2016-07-24 13:57:23 UTC

chalkie,
I think I am beginning to understand what you mean. Europe is attached to Sicily by a bridge and Europe is also attached to Peloponnisos by a bridge. A bit peculiar but just give me some time and I will more easily understand your way of thinking. But as I see things an island is attached to the main land and not vice versa.

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-07-24 21:00:34 UTC

Commented chalkie in Quesada 2016-07-24 21:27:52 UTC

so if you think that Great Britain is an island and a part of Europe attached to mainland Europe your intelligece is low according to you. What intelligens do you need to have to think vice versa? Like yours?

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-07-24 22:10:14 UTC

May I suggest that before you question someones intelligence(according to me?????), you learn how to spell it.

It's either reading your mundane comments or counting sheep to help me get to sleep. The sheep are winning, mainly because they're not troll like. Keep going, you may end up arguing with yourself (and losing).

Commented chalkie in Quesada 2016-07-24 23:16:28 UTC

chalkie,
may I remind you that it was you who started the intelligence question. In my humble oppinion an island is attached to the main-land by a bridge or a tunnel. If that is low intelligence or not I leave to others. And if spelling is an important thing for you I admit my mistakes.

Commented reindeer keeper in La Marina 2016-07-25 13:15:05 UTC

I give up. You just talk nonsense all the time for the sake of arguing and frankly, your not worth the time. Enjoy your life and try not to score points off people because you're not very good at it. No doubt you'll want the last word, but fortunately I won't be reading it.
