MOJACAR BEACHCOMBER JOHN'S FISHING NEWS • Douglas

Boat Fishing. Martin and his son Josh returned to Mojacar for a spring holiday break and had a day fishing with ‘Orca Steve’. Luckily there was a break in the weather from the harsh winds that we have been experiencing for the last week which allowed the sea conditions to improve and offer a comfortable day’s fishing with a slight swell and a light north westerly wind.

Initially they tried fishing in the shallow waters opposite the Repsol garage on the Garrucha to Mojacar road in approximately 60ft to 120ft of water, Steve had previously seen some shoals here. They were hit constantly with small bites and for their efforts landed a small pickerel which identified what the shoal probably consisted of. With no decent bites Steve moved the boat out into 200ft and steadily drifted to 350ft but only had a pandora.

With young Josh wanting to catch a fish the pressure was on so Steve tried a spot off of Vera Playa beach where fish had been caught on a couple of previous trips but shallow enough for Josh to enjoy the experience of dangling a worm! and feeling a good bite. It wasn't long before they were into pandoras, pouting and combers. Josh got the bite he had been waiting for and successfully landed an Atlantic mackerel. The fishing continued steadily until the wind once again strengthened and so they called it a day with Josh beating his dad once again.

Friday morning was a funny old morning with dark skies, gusty winds and the occasional spot of rain dropping on the windscreen as Steve approached Garrucha. The odd glimpse of blue sky and the peaking yellow sun rising on the horizon gave the impression of an improving day and good enough for ‘Blue Sea Matt’ and his mate Nick to join Steve for a day out fishing. How wrong he was!

Steve anchored the boat behind the harbour wall over a 360ft hole and they started to catch the odd pandora and comber and this is where they stayed for an hour. Contrary to the shipping forecast the sky darkened and the wind picked up and before they knew it the heavens opened up and the rain came down.

Not wanting to give up on a day’s fishing they huddled in the cabin and fished with their rods poking out the sides but the fishing dropped off as quickly as the rain came. They persevered until the wind got too strong and tore the anchor from its holding point and they started to drift quickly. As it was still relatively early Steve suggested, and the lads agreed, that a bit of trolling was possible which was not successful as they caught nothing.

The only highlight of the morning was to see ‘Captain Brian Cuba’ exit the harbour on his boat with 5 people huddled together in his cabin all sheltering from the rain, Brian took the boat out 500yds then did a swift 180 deg about turn and whizzed straight back into port followed by Steve and the two cold and wet lads that had braved the day. The sunny Mediterranean eh?

A break in the weather gave ‘Chef Jeremy’, ‘Butcher Martin’ and his brother ‘Engineering Alan’ who is over on holiday a chance to go out with Steve for a spot of fishing. The skies were clear and azure blue but the wind was cold from the north at approximately 5 knots gusting to 12 initially but the sea was pretty flat with only a slight swell.

As they got out into open water and looked back to land they could see the snow capped mountains to the north where the cold wind was coming from and picturesque sight to see. They tried fishing in a few different spots namely the Repsol garage and Garrucha lighthouse areas but without much success so Steve made the decision to anchor up behind the Garrucha harbour wall and shelter from the biting wind.

He dropped a bait bag loaded with a heavy stone over the side and began to fish. Soon they were into fish with Jeremy, Martin and Alan all catching good pandoras, combers, pouting and blue mouths. The wind picked up as usual so they called it a day with nothing special in the fish

There is still nothing different being caught at the moment but hopefully as the water temperature increases there might be some better species and specimens around!

Steve says the new Garrucha marina seems to have design issues! The other day with a strong gale force SW wind blowing into the harbour entrance and white horses cresting the waves (in the harbour), the new moorings had no protection from this. We all know that the SW wind is a regular occurrence in the afternoons during the year. The wave’s swell was going straight under the pontoons tossing the moored boats all over the place, many bashing and crashing into the new structure!
Steve is glad his boat isn't going there and isn’t sure there is a solution unless they build a wave break or something in the harbour in front of the new structure. He always thought a harbour was to "Protect" boats from this kind of thing!
Steve don’t forget this is Spain!!!

Shore Fishing.
A few more anglers are now reporting their catches to me although the fish caught are on the whole very small.
‘London Bill’ has been concentrating his fishing North of Villaricos with a Spanish friend. They have been catching some half decent doradas weighing over 1lb plus and lots of striped bream just under 1lb and cow bream about 1/2lb.
'Uncle Albert' is being cremated tomorrow (As I write this) and his family are bringing his ashes here to be spread over his favourite fishing mark in May and I'll be there.

Coarse Fishing.

‘Baza Barry’ fished Murcia’s Argos Lake again and had about 50lbs of fish in an 8 hour session, carp to 3lbs and barbel to 2lbs.
This week’s Rods and Reels competition was held on the River Segura at Murcia. The river was in fine form, with the grey colour gone and back to the greener colour of last year. The river didn´t disappoint, as can be seen from the results some good weights were achieved. The majority of fish were on the small side with Dave Hutchinson having 88 fish and Dave Hoare with 106 fish. Still we don’t know when the dredging is going to start but if the fishing stays as it, the longer the better.

Top rods on the day
1st Dave (The Sweetie Man) Hutchinson fishing the pole using pellet with 61.1/2lbs.
2nd Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare fishing the pole using bread with 49.3/4lbs.
3rd Doug (Welsh Goldminer) Hornblow  fishing the pole using corn with 49lbs.

Last week’s Abbey Angling’s venue was the first visit of the year to Embalse de Argos. There was some colour to the water and it was high, backing right up into the tree line. This is a venue that some four years ago would produce many catches of 100+lbs, but now a-days the weights are much lower mainly because of the number of anglers that consistently take large amounts of fish allegedly for the table, which are probably caught illegally. I.e.; with more than two rods, long lining and by anglers with no licenses. While Abbey’s anglers were there they were pleased to see the Guardia come down and check the licenses of anglers. Presumably because they had no licenses they told them to leave and also came back later in the day to check if they had returned.

1st Doug (Welsh Goldminer) Hornblow fishing the feeder using pellet with 75lbs. This was nearly all barbel.
2nd Lennie (Ex Cultural Attaché) Bolton fishing the feeder using maggot with 70.3/4lbs.
3rd Dave (The Sweetie Man) Hutchinson fishing the pole using paste with nearly 39lbs.
