Recommend a Restaurant

With the start of the tourist season not far away and the need to promote the area it would be a good idea for some of the local people to add show recommendations for the bars and restaurants, the idea is not to have a chat about each one but a small write up as to the ones that are worth visiting and why.
This can be added to the wall or My Spanish Life, remember these write ups will be seen by a lot of people that may then come to the area.

We eat regurlyly at The Patagonia and it is excellent, the staff are polite and professional and the food is excellent. It is not cheap but the price reflects the quality and hopefully if it remains profitable it will remain open, something that is lost on so many establishments round here.

I would also recommend Rojos who do an excellent 3 course menu del noche for around 12 euros.

Suzie's bar - los balcones - Dale and Suzie are great hosts and good fun. Nice bar to visit any evening, the locals are very friendly and welcoming. Sunday evenings should be a good night as an entertainer called Rock a Billy is on, on a regular slot. 100% Recommended!!

I've just clicked into MY Spanish Life Box (along the top of the page in orange).

Then I found the Bars, Cafes, Restaurants down the left had side and clicked in. There are quite a lot of restaurants already listed.

STEVE - Perhaps it would be a good idea if a person would like to do a write up and it is already there, that there could be a Comment Box under the original posting for various people to say what they wish about a certain restaurant or bar. Then the people trying to find out about a certain restaurant/bar could read several different reports. What do you think?

Commented Carol in La Marina 2013-02-10 16:09:11 UTC

Grill House followed by Bonnies
Indian has to be Posh Palace
For Pizza is on the Strip
Ramones for Steak
Fish & Chips is Our Plaice
Breakfast is Finale Whistle & Lunch
There is a lot more but those are the main ones

Commented FOX160 in La Marina 2013-02-10 16:28:43 UTC

Total opposite from us Marie, we have eaten there many times, had their sunday roast (the best on the urb), their steak is to die for and their menu del dia has wonderful choices, all with excellent, polite service, the last time we ate there was Wednesday and it was as usual wonderful.

What is the problem with the cook serving at tables, they are saving on paying staff, and there is definately not a problem with the bar man talking to his customers.

Commented Linda Reed in La Marina 2013-02-10 17:13:24 UTC

There are so many wonderful places to eat, we would recommend the Victoria 11 Chinese, Posh Palace, J's Bar, Final Whistle, La Taberinta, Rojos all in Consume Square, then Cagneys & Hillside at the top of the urb and finally the Sport Complex on a Sunday night.

Commented Linda Reed in La Marina 2013-02-10 17:16:38 UTC

ROJOS I have never had a bad meal, bad service, or been ignored since the new owners took over just over a year ago. We have often had their Sunday lunch and it is one of the best on the URB.

Commented jaytee in La Marina 2013-02-10 18:19:00 UTC

Of course you can have a personal opinion Sandra. I think you are just one of a few people that come up on the forum to try and cause problems.

Well I and three friends had Sunday Lunch in Rojos today, 4 persons 3 courses each 1 Vodka & Tonic 3X cokes 1 Large wine. Served with panache and staff with a sense of humour, We were there for 2 1/2 hours only because we we enjoying ourselves and were not rushed. Food was ideal for Sunday Lunch. Total cost 42euros all inclusive. Will certainly be going there again.

Commented Robert in La Marina 2013-02-10 21:06:56 UTC

If its sunday lunch your after then there is no better than the Hillside in La Marina, the food and staff are excellent.

I recommend
The Yellow Rose of Texas Benimar. Outstanding, excellent quality tex mex food. Authentic in every way. Great service reasonably priced menu(not cheap). No fast food here, cooked to order but beware huge portions !

Best Pina coladas on the costa. Lovely mexican cantina setting with some seating on the outdoor wooden veranda.

Very popular the only downside is you must book ahead and they close for about three months out of season.

love it

Enjoy!

best regards

Debra

I also recommend the Patagonia. Their prices are fair and range from €5. I would suggest trying their new home-made lasagne for €8.50. WoW! amazing flavours! also included a bottle of wine for 2. so we were left completely full and satisfied for around €20!

Commented scuroluce in La Marina 2013-02-10 22:22:50 UTC

Marie,...were you in the same place as me today??? although i was not eating in Rojo's i popped in for a couple of beers as i sometimes like to have a quiet one,..the staff were non stop with the service and very polite and i'm damn sure that helen who was doing the waiting on didn't ignore you on purpose,..as for Jez chatting to customers at the bar,..it's his job!!! he is the bar man!!! if he has people sat at the bar, it is his job to make those customers feel as welcome as ones in the dining area! I'm pretty sure the mistake of over charging you by €10 was exactly that,,,a mistake! oh yeah cheers for the drink Robert, much apreciated! and thanks to Jez and Shez for the roast spuds and gravy while i was watching the rugby! (guess my identity is busted now...lol)

Unless you have eaten in Rojos in the past 3 months you are not entitled to an opinion, as Sheralyn and Jez have only had it for that long. When were you there?

Well Marie, im not sure what to say, however im quite sad that you deleted your coment as i'd like other people to have been able to see it for longer. I don't really understand your coment ref 10 Euro over-charge as far as i know, NO ONE was overcharged and if anyone had been, they would have been refunded straight away. All the people who work here, work very hard long hours for little pay, they all do their best and im sure no one would have ignored you when required another drink. Leaning on the bar,,,,mmmm. well your welcome to come and do a 14 hour shift here and see how you get on. ALL customers are important here, in the bar and the restaurant NO ONE leans here and does nothing, We all have to work hard. I think the fact we do 50 to 70 covers in a restaurant this size says more than enough.

First of all id like to thank all the people for the kind feedback on this site about ROJOS. We do our best, dont always get things right, but who does. Since we started we have had great support from people who have drank and ate in the bar and given us great moral support when many bars are under pressure. All bar owners in the urb work long hours and to be honest struggle. Maria, Ive looked into your comments a bit more tonight, we have had no one booked in under your name, we had no complaints on Sunday and as I did all the pricing of tickets and was the only person on the till I know we didnt overcharge anyone. I fully support all the girls who work at Rojos who put in a fantastic shift and i think we have a great team here. I challenge you to come into the bar and we will if i am wrong, give you a free meal. But at a guess id say that we wont see you.We thank all our customers old and new. Pity its the odd few who seem to want to abuse this site and cause people trying to make a go of a business at a hard time so many problems. Look forward to meeting you Maria.

Marie removed her comments cos she realised they could come back at her,or him?? if these malicious acccusations were given to a Spanish lawyer and found to be untrue, she or he?? would be up in court,,the court would demand to know her or his?? details,,they don't take kindly to this.
Steve,I guess you log and save everyones comments/details

Commented goonerpeter in La Marina 2013-02-12 13:06:37 UTC

Totaly agree Peter, i didnt read the abuse he or she gave to someone a week ago. The accusations agains Rojos are totaly untrue. People who have eaten with us know the service we try to offer and im sure will come again. At the end of the day come and see for yourself and if its bad vote with your feet. Many bars offer fantastic value in the Urb and always do their best. I really hope Marie is not another bar with a grudge. Most people in consum get on well, We have support from many bars and we try to eat and drink in others when we have a day off. Cagneys, Montys, Zodiacs, Palm tree, George, Temptations and Final whistle to name but a few. I for one want every bar to prosper and Wish Chris and Sam it Los Amigos the best of luck with their new bar and ill sure we will have the odd beer there as well.

I too am sorry to hear about the bad press Rojos had received from one person.

That said we were asked to recommend a restaurant and not have a chat about it.

Maybe it would help if people stuck to the remit " just make a recommendation "

Based on the cliche "theres no such thing as bad publicity" I wish Rojos well and hope the bad post will have people flocking to their place to prove the "nay sayer" wrong

Kind regards

Sorry folks!
Only one restaurant in this vicinity worth the name:
BIBIANA'S in San Fulgencio.

Commented Friendlyviking in La Marina 2013-02-13 07:25:50 UTC

Sorry Friendlyviking - I do not agree with you. We went there once with some friends and as the main room was so brightly lit we went into the room on the left. There was only one other couple in there and the actual room itself was so boring - nothing to look at - no nice decorations, and cut off (no windows). I will admit the food was very nice but would not go back again. There are many better restaurants to go to.

One of my favourites is the Chinese restaurant up the strip - nr the old Jacks Bar and the card shop. Beautiful food , very friendly staff and an excellent price. We go there very regularly.

Commented QueenBee in La Marina 2013-02-13 12:42:39 UTC

Hi Friendlyviking
its great that you think so highly of BIBIANAS and im sure they deserve your praise but can I respectfully suggest it isnt fair to say they are the only ones who deserve the credit.

We all have different tastes and expectations and the same venue or menu doesnt suit everyone and that doesnt mean the others are bad or less deserving of credit

I personally am a big fan of thre yellow rose in benimar but it isnt the only restuarant ive been to on quesada and the surrounding area that deserves full praise. I simply chose it as a standout experience for me.

My brothers are great fans of TJs in Benimar because they love their full english served well. Its not my cup of tea, not because theres anything bad about it, it just isnt to my taste when im in spain.

There are many great places to eat with lots of great hosts, I just didnt want to come onto the forum with an endless list and hog the page.

Anyway its good that everyone is contributing and giving good feedback, it gives more exposure to those people who are providing a great service and making us want to come back for more .

Well done to all the owners of food establishments, yours isnt an easy job and many of us do really appreciate the lengths you go to.

I personally am looking forward to returning to my place later this year and cant wait to visit some of the lovely eateries in the area.

Dressing up for dinner is one of the nicest things about being out there!

kind regards

Debra

We prefer The Hogs Head & The Sports Complex for food and entertainment. The Final Whistle would be another choice for us as we like Mel's food as well. But, each to their own, different people like different things so it is totally unfair to judge anyone. Would go to Cagney's but unfortunately it is a taxi ride away from us, and we do not drink & drive..

Do you mean Casa Jaen? If so, we've had some beautiful meals in there. The place is usually packed. Very basic venue but Vicente (The Owner) is so very friendly and helpful. The only thing that puts us off is the tall dark hair lady that is always there as a waitress - to put in bluntly she is ALWAYS such a miserable woman. I'm surprised she still has a job. The food is beautiful and so much of it. We have had many lovely evenings there on our own and with large parties.

Commented Carol in La Marina 2013-02-14 07:59:28 UTC

Carole
I doubt you will have many more wonderful evenings at Casa Jaen after publicly slagging of the tall dark haired waitress.

Its good to have opinions but sometimes you can be outspoken to the point it offends

The purpose of the restaurant reviews is to" big up" the restaurants not to "run down" the staff

You say she's miserable every time your there, ever thought about why that might be Carole ?

Remember the tall dark haired waitress has access to the kitchen and your food and she'll probably hear about your comments ?

DEBRA - As stated on here loads of time - everyone is allowed their own opinion and for your info it is not just me that thinks this. A lot of people have commented on her attitude. We have been going there off and on for many many years now because the food is so delicious and, The Owner, is a lovely bubbly chatting man.

If she does hear about my comments Debra - it might make her buck up her ideas and be a little more friendly to her customers. After all it's the customers that pay her wages.

Commented Carol in La Marina 2013-02-14 11:47:06 UTC

Carole
Yeah well i'm not talking about whats been said loads of times i'm referring to your comments. We are meant do be doing restaurant reviews to raise the areas profile that's all

Anyway why don't you ask her next time your in
" what would make her happier in her work"? you might be surprised by her answer especially when she says

" not having you as a customer would make me happy Carole".

Now don't get out your pram Carole i'm pulling your leg

Seriously though instead of slagging her off take a different approach, try and win her round . You never know she might have really shitty life, or she might hate the job but cant afford to walk away, she wont be alone in that.

Also I love how you say on here "everyone is allowed their own opinions" when you only actually mean that if they agree with you !

In terms of posting on a forum/internet etiquette, did you know that when you type in capital letters it means you are shouting at someone so when you typed in DEBRA are you shouting at me ?

Commented marko in Quesada 2013-02-14 14:43:21 UTC

Well I can recommend Ramons in the grey area. I expect everyone else who lives on the Urb could as well. Its not the most inviting place to look at, decor etc, but the food is magic..the steak is wonderful and good value..

Commented Souxie in La Marina 2013-02-14 16:25:57 UTC

Commented Souxie in La Marina 2013-02-14 16:27:42 UTC

The dark haired lady is Olga, who hails from Riga in Latvia. I find her extremely friendly and helpful and I've had a laugh and joke with her on more than one occasion. She even likes to guess what I'm going to order. Judging by the price of the meal and the amount of food you get, I can't imagine that the staff are paid popstar wages, so maybe she's finding life a bit difficult, eh? Also, you get back what you give out sometimes, don't you?

Commented Geoff in La Marina 2013-02-14 17:00:04 UTC

Debra and Marko,
I am in agreement with both of you regarding Carol's comments on this forum. She is not only very opinionated she is downright rude. Carol, a message for you, there may not be horse meat in your food the next time you visit the Jaen restaurant, but there may be something else even more revolting!

Commented Roger in La Marina 2013-02-14 19:10:13 UTC

To Souxie and Geoff
I couldnt agree more!

Keep on giving what youre giving and youll keep getting what your getting.

Seems Carole has given a few people a hard time on this forum, maybe its time to look to thyself Carole and ask yourself why you keep coming across people who dont agree with you, could it be that youre not always right

We were saying earlier that not everyone likes the same restaurants and of course the same is true of people, the thing is when your unkind about a living breathing person its hurtful and can do a lot of damge to their self esteem, particularly if those comments are made publicly.

Plus it just makes you look like a twat when you slag people off

The law of reciprocity is a wonderful thing, I prefer to use it for the greater good

No teeheee Carole, try holding back from hurting someone in the future, you never know you might even like it.

Kind regards

Debra

Commented we love it here in Quesada 2013-02-14 19:34:02 UTC

Well i think your being very unkind to carol. i expect a freindly service when I go out for a meal and a few beers. There are many people looking for a job, and that is every waitreses job to wait on tables and be plesent to the customers

Commented Henry in La Marina 2013-02-14 21:40:21 UTC

Yes Henry
but do you think is fair for the customers to publicly insult the staff?

I dont and I reiterate there are two sides to every story but its unlikely the poor waitress will ever have a chance to respond.

Worse than that, everyone who now goes in Jaens after reading the post on here will probably now gawp at the poor woman to see what shes like

Now that is unkind !

kind regards

Debra

Commented we love it here in Quesada 2013-02-14 21:52:13 UTC

Slagging off is a rather strong word Debra, we have been to Casa Jean many time over the years and thoroughly enjoyed it and that is why we keep going back, but the waitress that Carol is talking about does not have the same rapport / attitude with the customers as the other staff there do.

This could be to do with her background / culture but was someones opinion.

Commented Linda Reed in La Marina 2013-02-15 13:04:41 UTC

Hi Linda
thank you for your comment, as weve all agreed, we all have and are entitled to our opinions, just right too.

That said you will notice Geoff posted a comment about Olga the waitress and portrayed her in a completley different light, in a good way?

As ive already stated we all feel differently about people we meet, such is the human psyche and you are right in that Carole is absolutley entitled to her opinion, but I reiterate Carole can be and is often unkind about others and I think she should give a little more thought to what she posts.

Im not suggesting for one moment she should not have an opinion but Im suggesting that she neednt be so vocal with her negative comments.

I dont buy this " tell it like it is " if it means hurting someone or sullying a persons reputation just because you havent gelled with them?

Im all for honesty but there are better ways to have your say.

I notice as a reader of the site, that you do socilaise with Carole and obviously your opinion is that Carole is a nice friend and I have no reason to doubt that however, you can't get away from the fact that she can be cutting on here and I think it is unnecessary.

Anyway Linda I look forward to the next topic on here and all of the associated opinions however many and varied they might be.

Do have a fab weekend

Kind regards

Debra
