as our holiday is fast approaching, please could you advise what products (insect repellent) you find helpful, there are so many sprays, creams body washes etc, what do you buy locally or recommend.

I always use Altan in a red can. Since using this I have only been bitten once and I live here.
Hope this helps. Do not use Boots own, my friend's skin peeled when she used this even though it said
you can use it on 6 months and over.

You are correct with your spelling did not have the can in front of me. But, again I say
I find it the best against the horrible little nippers.
If you get bit try Fenistil. Brilliant stuff... gets rid of the itch and the lumps. from local chemists.

As a slave to mosquito bites I have tried everything over the years and the one constant (for me) is avons skin so soft after bath dry oil spray. It was never invented as a mossie repellent but it works really well, So much so the british military use it in hot climates.( this has been a topic on the forum before so im sure others will confirm
The trick with all repellents is TOP UP REGULARLY ESPECIALLY WHEN GOING OUT FOR THE EVENING
No im not an avon lady lol but I do sympathise with any sufferers of mossie bites. Oh and of course the avon spray makes your skin lovely too, just as an added bonus

Debra I did read about the Avon oil on MSE website, very interesting.
Siouxe Phenergan makes us drowsy, so although its a good antihistamine, we don't want to be drowsy.

I avoid antihistamine, I have too. The biggest side effect I have from a mossi bite is that it makes me sleep- deeply. If I took antihistamines Id miss the holiday altogether lol
Ive started using an extractor when i get a bite,looks like a syringe, its a sucker that pulls the poison out. Its not a preventative but since using this I no longer have to go to hospital for steriods and antibiotics, my problem is I have an allergic reaction to the bite so I have to be careful as this can be very dangerous. Of course being on Quesada and not too far from the salt lakes is probably the worst location for a mossie phobe !

Peter, I don't get itch and lumps from my local chemist, so don't need to get rid of them. Hope you're itch and lump free shortly. I think if I were you I'd think about changing my chemist the delightful Mary Catherine xxx
