NIE number

Hi, I am moving over in November with my family and we will need NIE number's to get the kids in school etc etc... Is it an easy process??? I have heard I can do it from here before I move over, but I have to go to the Spanish embassy in London. Has anyone experienced getting their NIE numbers recently? if so how easy is the process and what do I do, also where do I go? Thanks.

Hola,

We did ours ourselves in 2004, you need to take your original passports, plus photocopies of your passports, x 2 passport size photos, we did ours at Elche police station.

You do need to get up at the crack of dawn, to get to Elche police station before 8am to queue up, as they only see so many people in one day.

Good luck

Hola,

I did mine in May last year (2010). I had no knowledge of Spanish and I went to an agent who said they could help me do it, but the cost was 380€ (for the 4 of us) and they said they would take me down to the police station (in Cartagena), fill the forms out and come with me a week later to collect the N.I.E's. I thought this was a bit expensive so researched it on the net what I had to do, I downloaded the forms, translated it myself with my dictionary and then went down to the police station myself with the passorts and photos as requested. We were also told to be there early, and was straight in, they went over the forms etc and in the end it cost me 40€, 10€ per person. Bit of a difference to the €380 I was quoted!!! I then went back a week later to collect the N.I.E and was a felt a great sense of achievement that with not being able to speak the language then, I had managed to do all this within 2 weeks of living here, all by myself.

Good luck
