The Gredas of Bolnuevo: a coast still being carved
The sculpted yellow forms behind Bolnuevo beach look solid from a distance, yet they are a temporary moment in a soft geological sequence. The Gredas were built from marine sediments and then selectively worn by wind and water, leaving tougher caps above narrow columns and undercut walls.
Why it matters
Around 5.3 million years ago, the opening of the Strait of Gibraltar refilled the Mediterranean and sea covered this area. Marl, silt, sandstone and gravel accumulated and compacted into a platform. When land and sea levels changed, those beds were exposed. Because each layer resists weather differently, ordinary erosion produced the extraordinary profiles visible today.
Plan the visit
View the main formation from the public beach-side area, then step back to compare its layers with the cliffs toward Bolnuevo's coves. Morning or late light reveals sediment texture better than harsh midday sun. The formations are fragile and continuously changing; climbing for a photograph accelerates damage and risks collapse.
- Keep to established viewing ground and never stand beneath an undercut overhang.
- Do not climb, scratch names or remove pieces of sediment.
- Combine the stop with a coast walk only in suitable heat and sea conditions.
- Use older photographs to notice natural change, not to demand a fixed silhouette.
