Museo Salzillo: seeing Murcia's processional sculpture up close

Francisco Salzillo's processional groups were made to be seen moving through Murcia on Good Friday morning, changing with sunlight, music and the pace of their bearers. Museo Salzillo preserves them around the Church of Jesús, where close viewing reveals carved gestures, polychrome surfaces and relationships that a crowded procession can hide.

The pasos belong to a confraternity

The Cofradía de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, founded in 1600, commissioned and guards the great Passion scenes. Groups such as La Cena, La Oración del Huerto and El Prendimiento organise several figures into theatrical moments. Their normal museum setting remains tied to worship and the annual procession.

Look across a whole group before concentrating on faces and hands. Salzillo directs attention through posture, eye lines and fabric, while colour separates participants and helps the scene read outdoors. The works are narrative machines, not isolated statues.

A church designed for drama

The circular Church of Jesús surrounds visitors with chapels for the pasos. Paolo Sístori's late-eighteenth-century trompe-l'œil architecture and painted angels heighten the sense of a ceremonial theatre. A later connecting corridor permits close museum viewing without stripping the sculptures from their sacred setting.

The collection also includes Salzillo's large nativity ensemble and workshop sketches. Hundreds of small figures move the artist's storytelling from Jerusalem to an expansive popular landscape, while models show ideas before they became finished wood.

Look slowly

• Allow at least an hour for the church, pasos, nativity and sketches.
• Begin with one complete scene, then revisit details rather than photographing every figure immediately.
• Check restrictions around worship and the Holy Week transfer of works.
• Use the Plaza de San Agustín as part of the visit; it is the procession's ceremonial threshold.

Put sculpture back into Murcia

Walk afterwards towards the cathedral, comparing Salzillo's intimate carved drama with Jaime Bort's public stone façade. During Holy Week, current confraternity routes and crowd controls take priority over any ordinary museum plan.
