Laurel and Hardy restaurant

Just returned from lunch at Laurel and Hardys in Quesada, and I wonder how these restaurants are allowed to get away with it. Just paid 20euros for a Sunday roast where although the veg were ok, with the exception of the cauliflower which was raw. The meat a lamb shoulder was tough, overcooked and really uneatable, when I told the manageress (well I think that's what she was) was told that the chef had said it was ok, and then proceeded to tell me I had eaten some, yes lady 2 mouthfuls which I have spat out and left on the side of the plate. That was just 1 problem another was spending the 1st 15mins chasing flies away, warm wine , a rude chef. All I can say is I wont be going again and I wont be recommending it either, this restaurant is no different to the other one,for the prices you charge pull you socks up and get some staff that are not rude.

Was that 20 euros for one meal or two?

Cant see the point to leave the Urb for traditional English food.
But thanks for the heads up

I agree Carol, only went because Hillside was closed. but never mind you live and learn, at least it lets other people know.

I would be fuming if I had paid all that money and could not eat it. 5 euros a head is a lot of money if it is rubbish. Nothing like your own Sunday Roast.

Jaen's in Guardamar every time then! All the food you can eat and all the wine you can drink for 9 Euros per person. And a choice of at least 15 first plates and 15 second. Staggering value for money!

Carol......where do you go that you can get 2 3 course meals + a bottle of vino for that price.....we must be going to the wrong places. We need to try you're.

Geoff.....where in Guardamar is Jaens please?

In the main street, go past the town hall on your left heading towards Torrevieja and it's about 200 yards further along, on the left, just before a right hand bend in the road. Actul address is 49 avenida del pais Valenciano. At busy times it pays to get there at 7pm, because it soon fills up. Not the poshest place on the planet, but I've never found better value anywhere. Casa Jaen in Guadamar is definately not my cup of tea. The last time I went there I had a upset stomach for days. Not being a big eater I prefer my portions small, quality before quantity.

Conversely, I've had at least a hundred meals there, probably more, and I've never had any problem at all, nor has anyone I've taken there as far as I know.

Must agree, we are lost when Hillside stop Sunday lunch for the summer. Although I fully understand that they need a break too. I have already booked for the first Sunday they are serving. Roll on 9th September.

Satellite Sports Centre you get bread & Alioli, Starter - soup, croquettes or salad. main meal - whatever the roast is, pud or coffee plus half a bottle of wine each. At the moment though they have stopped Sunday lunches during the day but you can get them on a Sunday evening. 10 euros per person.

Casa Jaen - We have had many excellent meals there, but you do need to be hungry when you go in - an extremely popular restaurant and very cheap. I think its 8.50 euros and you get salad, bread & Alioli, Starter (which is like a main meal), main meal, pudding, coffee, wine (Red or white), water. So there is no need to pay extortionate prices..............

Yeah, thanks Carol, glad you agree. Hope it won't upset you too much to know that the price has gone up from 8.50 to 9 euros though!!

Still well worth it Geoff. We haven't been all through the Summer as it's too hot (no air con). We will be going back when it gets a bit cooler.

Hi Geoff
Can you tell me what food Jean's do
and is this open all week ?

Commented FOX160 in La Marina 2012-08-29 17:42:00 UTC

They're open lunchtimes and evenings. Only exception is that I have known them to be closed on a Monday evening, but I think that was in January. Firstly, you get bread and alli-oli and a plate of salad. Then they have a choice of at least 15 starters and at least 15 main courses and about 6 or 8 desserts. Choices include local fish, steak, chicken, pork knuckle, liver, moussaka, kebabs, sausages, and many more things. Favourite starters are vegetable hotpot or meat stew with potatoes, either of which are a meal in themselves. My wife likes melon with Spanish ham as a starter. Really big pieces of melon with loads of ham on. It really IS a place you have got to try, I can't explain what it's like. The service is a bit hit and miss, but that just seems to add to the fun of it. And if you say anything, the owner just gives you extra food to make up for it! Our son says that even if he was a millionaire, it would be the first place he would head for when he comes over on holiday. There is a never-ending supply of red wine from a barrel in the restaurant, and if you want to take some home, he sells it at 1 Euro a litre! Give it a go - the most you can lose is 9 Euros each. And if there's nothing on the menu that you fancy, you're just too fussy! There are many people who love it there, borne out by the fact that it's full up a lot of the time.

Hope all this helps

Geoff

We have been to Jaen's many times over the last 10 years and never once had any problems. When our family come over that is the first place the grandchildren say they want to go for a meal. If you cant find something you like on the menu you must be really picky.
We went to another of our favourite restaurants yesterday, Salon Paco on the road from the n332 behind the garage to Rojales just before the turn off to Viloriens. excellent food and only 10€, cant fault it.
