NEW CHARITY SHOP

A new charity shop will be opening shortly (about 5 to 6 weeks ) on Urb La Marina. To raise money for people based charities, for the needy, aged, medical needs etc. We need donations of paint, decorating materials, shop fittigs along with clothing, bric a brac household items and books etc.
We will be recruiting a team of volunteers to staff the shop in the near future, all donations can be dropped at Face of Beauty Parque del Manzanares 43 Urb La Marina tel 966 184 115 or 616110514

Good luck to you. I believe charity shops are so helpful to people but a times going to come where the government put a cap on this just like they are in the UK because certain tax breaks and all. Good luck though.

Andi I thought all Charity Shops had to pay retention tax? The unfortunate thing about all these Charity shops is that there will not be enough customers to go around and some may not survive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Very true Eve .... From what I saw on sky news a while back they government are capping charity shops in the UK and I see the government doing it over here soon. I agree with you no matter how much charity shops help people and the good causes, once theres lots and lots of them it's going to be hard some of them.

When you say you are raising money for "To raise money for people based charities" does this mean you are a charity in your own right and will be giving money to other charities?
If so can you give details of who you will be giving the funds to, are they in Spain or elsewhere?

Commented Daves Homes in Rojales 2012-01-28 08:43:04 UTC

We will not be a registered charity in our own right but will raise money for local charities around the area when needs are identified, there is not a definitive list at the moment as this will vary over time

Commented sallyannwheatley in La Marina 2012-01-28 09:09:53 UTC

I see, so you are not a charity shop!

Commented Daves Homes in Rojales 2012-01-28 09:17:46 UTC

Hi Dave
If you mean we will not be a retail outlet for a registered charity you are right. But we will be a not for profit organisation raising money for those in need not specifically for one or more organisations. eg Help the Aged, British Legion etc If any one can think of a catchy discription other than Charity Shop that will be great.

Hello Anonymous

I just think it is important to let people know who you are and how you are set up. Even more so when you are starting to advertise in the local forums.

By writing "NEW CHARITY SHOP" you are misleading people into thinking that you are registered and are controlled by the charity rules, where in fact you are a group of people who are interested in helping others and can do what you want with the money you make.

You also state that you are after donations but again this is a term related to a charity and not a business which at the end of the day is what you will be.

I would also think it a good idea to let people know who you are as I see we have no details as to even your name.

Anonymous.
Will agree with Dave, regarding the meaning of Charity shop, although I think I know exactly what you are trying to achieve, and i applaud you for that.I am hoping you will get a committee together to agree each year on what or who all donations will go to and make the finances open to public view.I have made quite public on this forum that i will help and back any charity that is set up to help people rather than animals, that is not because i dont like animal charities,it is because I believe we have some help for them on the Urb.but very little help for people in need.So before all the nit picking starts, you need to put a name to yourself, and perhaps a bit of your life
history, and exactly what you hope to achieve, plus what you would hope for in the future.
I know it seems a bit offish, but a lot of people have been duped in the recent past over many things on the Urb.and would like to help your cause, but until they learn to trust you, they may be wary of getting involved.
I am sure that everything you are doing is in the interest of people worse off than we are,Lastly perhaps having a word with Jeff at the council offices, may enlighten you as to what can be done and what should be done.
Best of luck for you in your quest for helping others less fortunate than ourselves

I am confused with this write up first of all you state you want decorating materials , shop fittings etc, donations of bric a brac etc. plus staff and now you are saying there isn't a shop. I think I will sign myself confused.com

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2012-01-28 13:36:47 UTC

Eve
As I read it,It will be a shop Unit,Albeit, not bona fide Charity shop.
But the income derived from this shop will be distributed amongst Local Charities that are involved in helping local people in some way.
If this is not correct, then I, Like you ,will sign off as confused.com

Commented Alan in La Marina 2012-01-28 13:57:32 UTC

Andi won't sign off as confused.com I will ask surely to be asking for donations and selling them you will have to pay taxes and all sorts on the money raised and stuff. Like Ev e says your asking for all this you just can't expect to sell it and not pay the correct fees because I'm sure it's a worthwhile cause but when you start handing money over to a group who does pay taxes and there taxes are checked and it's linked to a group whose not paid taxes on this money or donations then your entering a whole new ball-game
I will now sign off confused.com

I think the comments by the other members re tax is going to be the problem, as you are just regarded as a normal shop and have to pay the same as others, you may get your stock for nothing but you still have to pay on the sales price, this is not going to leave much to give away. Would it not be best to set up as a charity and get everything in order as it should be ?

Commented Daves Homes in Rojales 2012-01-28 14:44:09 UTC

Are you saying you are not going to be registered as a Charity or that you are going to be registered as a Charity for Charities? As Dave pointed out I think you should make yourself clear on who and what you are. If you want people to support you then you have to be UPFRONT with what you are doing

Commented Caroline in La Marina 2012-01-28 16:24:06 UTC

I known of such people whom operate the same way in East London, and what they are doing is selling off what they call the good stuff to
Bric & Brac shops then giving the remainder to the charities.
I feel there is enough good charities on the Urb
and I gave the stuff left behind (Furniture etc) to the children charity near the Consum.

It seems interesting that the person who put up the first post has not come back to explain what business plan they have, maybe they have not been back on line since this morning, but I wait with interest to see a response.

Commented Daves Homes in Rojales 2012-01-28 18:18:27 UTC

After I have been reading all the comments on this new charity shop I was thinking “unorganized”.
Grant wrote that he feels there are enough charities on the urb. I think that these charities have done a good and trusty work until now. It’s better to support these charities, than a new one which is unorganized.
In my life I have been given donations when possible and I have done voluntary work. But always when I was sure that the money was helping the right people and not lost.

Commented Frank in Almoradi 2012-01-28 20:24:37 UTC

I agree with you Frank, why is there a need for a shop that is not a charity that wants to give money to other shops that are? Any profit from the non charity shop will be reduced by the fact that they have to pay normal tax on sales from items donated, would it not maximize profits to give those items directly to the registered charity

Commented Daves Homes in Rojales 2012-01-28 21:21:34 UTC

I agree with all the comments above..this may be genuine..but it sounds extremely suspect to me (?)..but it's good to see that people here are questioning this..at least we all seem to have some sort of discernment on this forum!..Keep up the good work! ;)

Hi all. I would like to thank everybody for thier comments as some have been particularily interesting, especially those from Alan, we are now looking further into matters such as Tax and registration. We had a meeting with the town hall last Wednesday and will follow this up again on Monday.
