British Driving licences in Spain

I hear that since 19th Jan 2013 Britons who are resident in Spain must have their driving licence altered/renovated. However different sites advise different things. http://www.tumbit.com/how-to-guides/articles/21-how-to-apply-for-a-spanish-driving-licence.html says it is only a recommendation if you have a plastic UK licence but http://www.thinkspain.com/hottopics/drivingcarsinspain/licences.asp says you must go to get it stamped at Trafico Alicante. Anybody know for definite?

Hi Sam
If you are a resident in Spain, you must have a Spanish driving licence. If your UK one still has time left on it, you can get it changed to a Spanish one with no problem. If it has run out, you have to go through the procedure of a medical etc for your Spanish one.
I changed mine over last year with no problem. Hope this helps.

Sam,
I am informed by one of the people who we most use for NIE, Residencia etc that as long as I have an EU licence that I can use it until it expires. Because I am resident I must apply for a Spanish Licence on expirey but not before.
