August Fiesta at Consum Square

Hello La Marina,
Al here from Temptations.

After having a meeting today with our Mayor, Carlos Ramirez, our police chief, Jose Manuel Antolio, Counselor & advisor to the mayor Paulino & Counselor Jeff Wiszniewski, we, being the bar owners from Temptations, Hogs Head, The Final Whistle, & J's Bar & Cafe were informed that this years' August Foam Party Fiesta has been threatened by a Group Community President with legal action to the owners of this property to prevent the fiesta being held here at Consum Square. We were not informed as to the identity of this Group Community Presidents' name & have requested the identification of this person, but we were ALL very surprised that such a threat to the owners of the property so that the 3 day fiesta that brings thousands of people to La Marina at that time of the year would even be considered. WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH YOU?!!!!!! Last years' fiesta,to quote Jeff Wiszniewski, was the most successful & finally, the best organized fiesta La Marina has had in the last 5 years. The fiesta 2 years ago was a disaster with "apparently" no money to pay the musicians or fireworks. There were a mulitude of problems with that years' fiesta that are just easily to be forgotten. Last year Jeff & his band of assistants dealt with un-licensed people trying to put up illegal stands & illegal outside bars, thefts & a multitude of smaller problems in a very precise & professional manner. His attitude & a general interest in presenting a successful fiesta was appreciated by every business owner in the square. Now, we have a certain person that, because he feels that the 3 day fiesta is too loud & disturbs his sleep, has engaged a solicitor to put the pressure on the owners of Consum Square, that legal proceedings will be brought against them if the fiesta is not cancelled!!! Take a 3 day break with your partner,if you have one, & go up or down the coast & enjoy a quiet 3 days on your own.
As I said earlier, this fiesta brings approximately 2,500 people to enjoy a good time for 3 days. We, all the business owners have the opportunity to earn,( and believe me, it's 3, 18 hour days in a row) some well-needed funds that year after year are slowly getting smaller & more difficult to earn. This fiesta was held at the marketplace 4 years ago & was not successful at all. There was nothing to offer there as the few food & beverage stands were in short supply. This venue is, by far, the best place to hold this annual fiesta. There are more functions planned for other areas of the urbanization over the next 4 months so that business owners around the urb. can also see a little extra profit in this economically-challenged area. The summer trade has slowly dwindled over the past 6 years because of the economy & the lower value of the pound. The resulting drop in tourism is also partly to blame on the laws that are being enforced here due to the uncaring FEW bar owners that will not abide by the law as to entertainment that is far too loud. This, in turn, has started the "La Marina Moaners Club". I, also speaking on behalf of the bar owners that DO try to be sensible & close our windows & doors, am cognisant of the residents that live within earshot of our premises. We have installed sound-proofing in some cases & MOST of us have turned the volume down so as not to disturb our neighbours. There are only a few businesses that feel they have no reason to reduce the volume of their entertainment & the laws do not apply to them & these are the ones that should be singled out & dealt with accordingly. We are all trying our best to provide a comfortable evening out for our patrons but sometimes the wrong establishment gets the blame for other peoples noise. I have read all the posts here for the past month or so, & believe me, this site is also read by many people in other countries that are considering coming here either to visit or even a permanent move. I have at least 5 families that have already booked a holiday here to coincide with this years' fiesta. It will be a real dis-appointment to their childred who look forward to this & find when they arrive, that it has been cancelled or moved to a lesser quality location because some Group Community President feels it is not in his liking. La Marina needs all the help we & our council can get in promoting La Marina & get our community on a positive growth pattern again.
Because of this threat by a certain Group Community President, we are starting a petition to deliver to the owners of our property. We will have a signature page at every one of our businesses to ask for support from all of our friends & customers. There is a couple of provisions.
1. You must be a resident & have an N.I.E. number
2. You may only sign your name once. If you sign at one location, you do not need to sign again at another location.
With your support, we will be able to enjoy the August fiesta in its proper venue so please sign your name. Time IS of the essence in this matter.

COME LA MARINA RESIDENTS!! Show your support & lets start enjoying life again. I, for one, am tired of reading negativity day-after-day here in A Spanish Life. Everyone is entitled to their comments but it gets very boring reading about the same people going on about the same negative subjects all the time. We have come to the conclusion that there are a few La Marina Moaners' Club members that are just being miserable & nothing short of bull-dozing Consum Square will ever be satisfactory.

We have come to a reasonable solution to the noise problem that should be satisfying to most people.(you can't satisfy everyone!). The "responsible" business owners will lower the volume so as not to be offensive to our neighbours. We will shut the windows & doors at midnite with the music off by 1:15 A.M. We have been granted, by Valencia, a 1 hour extension for the summer that will be up to each business owner to use if needed. This should show the residents of La Marina that the "responsible" bar owners DO care about their sleeping habits. You have to realize in return, that the summer trade is very short & we are trying to earn as much as we can during this period. If there is a bar that is causing a problem, then it's up to you to identify the correct bar & have the police deal with THEM & not place the blame on another bar. The police telephone system identifies all incoming numbers so this will eliminate any ANONYMOUS callers. With the warmer weather & the law having to be outside to smoke, we will have more & more customers that want to be outside in the evening to enjoy Spain's lovely weather. We will all reduce the volume of our entertainment as much as possible but still give our customers an enjoyable evening.
I, speaking on behalf of myself, my wife Susan & the bar owners of Consum Square thank you in advance for your support & wish everyone a safe & happy summer. Thank you

Al Anders

OMG We have our flights to come over just for the fiesta.....I hope one person does not spoil it for thousands of people.

Seeing as we are not allowed to know this guys name or who he is, my comment is... What a wanker... Excuse my language but as Steve has said its a forum for free expression.
If the fiesta didn't happen, it would kill la marina off
once and for all.

Would also like to add this is Spain, the Spanish have been celebrating fiestas for years and years. If this guy is British then I'm sorry I'm ashamed of being British. I couldn't careless about how loud the fiesta is this is Spain and we have to respect the views there way of life and fiestas, not ruin them.

Commented Andi in La Marina 2012-05-10 16:26:25 UTC

I for one thoroughly enjoyed last years fiesta and hope it goes ahead for the good of La Marina and the extra trade it brings and will make a point of coming to sign with my support. The fact that the complainant is a community president should not add any weight to his argument unless he has the full backing of the whole of his community which is highly unlikely as there are probably more people who like to enjoy themselves than are prepared to prevent others from doing so.

Commented Tim in La Marina 2012-05-10 16:26:44 UTC

Well written Al. I for one agree with everything you said,I will sign the petition within the next 24 hours,I am sure the majority of people who live around La Marina will do so as well,in fact perhaps the person in queston may be outed,as the only person not to sign any petition.
best of luck to you and the other bar owners.

Commented Alan in La Marina 2012-05-10 17:04:07 UTC

If there are people out there that cannot cope with just 3 days of a fiesta then I must feel sorry for the miserable beggars. la Marina is considered to be a tourist area and consequently we have much lower Suma Bills than ordinary Towns, for instance you would pay about 3 times more Suma for your property in Almoradi, and on top of that the Fiestas last a whole lot longer and go on all night. So can we not have a little give and take. I will sign the petition willingly.

If he is so certain of the support of his community why does he not make himself known ,when i moved here just over a year ago i thought i was moving to an area with people who wanted to enjoy life how wrong i was a bunch of moaners.

Commented bluesboytoby in La Marina 2012-05-11 17:53:36 UTC

I think you will actually find most people are here to enjoy themselves and there is probably only about six moaners in La Marina but they are all regular contributers to this forum as there is nothing moaners like to do other than moan. La Marina is a lovely place to live and is full of lovely people in my experience.

Commented Tim in La Marina 2012-05-11 20:17:56 UTC

Here's a very true story a friend of mine we'll call him Jim has stayed with us a few times over the years. He is moving to Spain in September and asked for some advice so I gave him a few links that he could log on to ie RTN ,& a couple of the forums including this one, he phoned me last week to say is it really as bad as THIS FORUM suggests with noise and people complaining about kids etc. I reminded him he has spent a few holidays over here but that is not a home to stay in and that this area in particular is BRILLIANT a good mix of bars resturaunts a great beach great weather and generally a friendly community so before people post any more derogatory remarks on here think of the image you are creating and the potential damage you are doing. THINK POSITIVE, LIVE THE LIFE, ENJOY THE CLIMATE, BEACHES,BARS, FRIENDSHIP, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY yes I know there were a lot of caps there but shout it from the rooftops please.

hi tim its toby that posted that post about moaners there seems to be a group that would moan if they had nothing to moan about everytime i come on this site they have found something new to moan about if moaning was an olympic sport they could moan for england.perhaps we should call this site la marina moaners.

Commented bluesboytoby in La Marina 2012-05-12 08:38:50 UTC

Maybe the fiesta should be held at a different location every year, Consum, Super Valu, Phase one etc etc, that way all the other bar area’s would get a bite of the cherry, not just a select few.

Commented Golfer in La Marina 2012-05-12 11:58:07 UTC

Hope you enjoyed your holiday Golfer.
As you havnt been keeping up to date, arrangements have been made or are being made, for all areas to have some sort of entertainment through the year.
Hope that satisfies you,If not then the only place to have a three day entertainment special, without causing expensive problems, can only be the Consume 2 area, and seeing as this is about the best Bar/restaurant ratio in La Marina,It suits almost everybody, unless of course you want it to have these free shows where it suits the least amount of people

Commented Alan in La Marina 2012-05-12 12:48:36 UTC

Sorry Alan, I did not read the initial post properly, my fault. I thought “Group Community President” referred to one of the other commercial area’s that had made a complaint.
Ideal location would be a place that allowed all the urb bar owners to up a stall/bar, similar to what you find in other parts of Spain, then again, I also think it’s a pity we don’t have a proper traditional “Spanish fiesta” guess I am toooo old for foam parties etc.
Good holiday, thanks, United Arab Emirates, internet access VERY limited ?

Commented Golfer in La Marina 2012-05-12 15:27:26 UTC

Hi Golfer,
You could be lucky or not depending on your being able to Rock,One of the shows appearing in La Marina on the 7th July in the Market Area.It looks to be six Spanish Rock bands appearing and some of them look definitely heavy metal, also will have beer stall in the area.Sounds like it could be good to go ,or good to go away.
glad you had a good holiday,i spent 19 days in England at the same time you was away and had 19 days of rain, not so good when you suffer from Rheumatiod Arthritis, but a few days in Spain, and feeling so much better

Commented Alan in La Marina 2012-05-12 15:51:02 UTC

Never been here in August.....what is this fiesta about please?

Commented Maz in La Marina 2012-05-12 16:29:33 UTC

Well put Alan. We need more of these extra entertainment in La Marina to bring people into our great town. These people who are mourning will be the first to kick up if our business went down the drain, and the price of their property went down hill because La Marina became a ghost town. It is a great place to live , so lets not let a few narrow minded people spoil it for us all.

Commented SMUDGE in La Marina 2012-05-13 13:55:07 UTC

Simply use the Market area
Its away from everyone but simple for everyone to get to

Commented FOX160 in La Marina 2012-05-13 15:44:54 UTC

Grant
as I said earlier on this link,The Council have arranged FREE shows around La Marina, already this year we had the New Year party around the Victoria area, next the queens Jubilee party on the strip, after that the rock concert in the market area and the main fiesta around the car park on Consume2.What is wrong with that,I think at least on this point the Council have been forward thinking and i applaud them for that. They at least realise the importance of businesses in La Marina, which in turn can make la Marina a success, but you and a few others will be complaining next about how much is it putting on your suma,We seem to have a few people on this forum who have shown complete selfishness whose only interest is themselves.Get a life live it and enjoy it and let others do the same.I will agree they are entitled to their point of view, but at a guess a great bigger percentage of people on la Marina want their fiestas,So why dont we just agree not to start another silly "we dont want anything "on La Marina, well for heavens sake, I want what is on offer, because i want people to enjoy living and visiting here.

Commented Alan in La Marina 2012-05-13 16:37:25 UTC

Grant, I 100% agree.
Simply use the Market area

That way ALL of the bars on the urb, could put up a beer stall.

Commented Golfer in La Marina 2012-05-13 16:39:26 UTC

Golfer the Market area as been tried and it was not as good a success as the consum area.Do all the bar owners have outside bar facilities I think not can they staff them legalley (contracted workers) think not. What is wrong with what the council are doing by having different things on in different areas,as usual a would assume a very small minority wants to spoil things for the majority.
One more thing to Alan no I am not a Troll yes I have been called worse but I will get over it think the kettles calling the pot black

Commented david in La Marina 2012-05-13 17:22:30 UTC

come on its 3 days out of the year, the bars need customers to keep going the fiesta gives them a boost on takings, where will you go for your coffee or the odd night out when they've closed because your upset about 3 days in a year, get a life will you stop complaining and trying to spoil everybody else's fun. ITS 3 DAYS FOR GODS SAKE

Commented linda in La Marina 2012-05-14 15:24:36 UTC

lets find a patch of land in the middle of nowhere so if you drive there you cant have a drink if you have a drink you cant drive home we can hold the feista there .lets make it immpossible for buisnesses to make a living so then we can moan that there is nothing here in the way of entertainment .there are house's around the market sq as well .

Commented bluesboytoby in La Marina 2012-05-14 16:15:26 UTC

Alan
I haven't once complained about noise
Just puts a stop to people moaning
Was just an compromise

Also a shame to see a large area only being used for market days.

Would love to have loads of Fiesta's
wonder if we could combine with the Spanish ones ?

Commented FOX160 in La Marina 2012-05-14 16:28:01 UTC

Grant,
You are right,it did seem like I had labelled you as one of the noise complainers, and I was wrong, for that i apologise,I believe you thought it was a compromise, but earlier in the same thread,I had pointed out that the Council were arranging for celebrations to be spread around the Urb.and that has to be a step forward.
Yes it is a shame the land used for the market is poorly used, but again what else could go there. It perhaps would be a good thing if people put suggestions on this forum,it may well be that someone has a great idea, but is not talking about it,just imagine if that happened and the council took up the idea, what a great boost that would give to the people of La Marina and to this Forum,

Commented Alan in La Marina 2012-05-14 17:25:30 UTC

Hi Alan

No probs
Maybe use the market area for Summer Festivals in which will bring more people into the area and boost local economy
Also shut the high street and start a Summer Carnival or weekend event would be brilliant
Has anyone thought of involving the other communities on the Urb too
now that would be cool

Commented FOX160 in La Marina 2012-05-14 17:47:27 UTC

i've just read on the la marina info site that there's going to be a rock concert at the market square july 7th [one day only] wonder whose going to complain about that

regarding the Rock Concert keep up its already posted above !

Commented FOX160 in La Marina 2012-05-15 15:13:43 UTC

Don't think you will get any complaints regards noise from the Market area as it is several hundred meters from the nearest resident’s bedroom, so should not be an issue.

Grant ---- Love it !!!! Could use them when HWMBO starts picking on me.
I love the Fiesta’s in Spain, I do prefer a proper Spanish fiesta, dressing up, parades etc, Not so keen on the foam thing though.
Mind you if I lived in the quad house across the way from Consum I might view the issue a little different.
I still think that the Fiesta location should be rotated every year, or as you yourself said, the market area so as all the bars get an equal crack of the whip. Let every bar put up a stall. Reading posts on this and other forums, licences should not be a problem, as our council tend to turn a blind eye anyway as far as the bars are concerned anyway
I don’t think the Street Party is going to help the bars on Phase 1 that much as people will be taking their own food and drink, and it is not a 60 hour event like the Fiesta. .
Another thought, down by Lidl, loads of parking, noise would not be an issue, easy to get to, taxi drivers would make a bob or two as well, plus would help promote the area of the future.
