San Juan de Alicante/Sant Joan d'Alacant

The province's smallest municipality by area, historically the huerta estate country of the Alicante bourgeoisie and now a compact residential town around a protected historic core.

Estate country in the huerta

A small town of country houses and towers

Sant Joan grew around its parish church at the centre of the irrigated huerta. Through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Alicante's landowning families bought the best land here and built residences with towers, chapels and formal gardens.

Older and plainer defensive towers, built from the sixteenth century against corsair raids, stand among them. The whole ensemble is now the historic layer within a commuter town that grew fast after 1960.
