Sant Joan d'Alacant: country houses in the huerta

Sant Joan d'Alacant is a small municipality on the plain north of Alicante, almost surrounded by the city and its neighbours. It has the smallest area of any town in the province and, for most of its history, one clear purpose: it was where prosperous Alicante families kept their farms and their summer houses in the huerta. That legacy of estates, gardens and defensive towers is what distinguishes it now.

A village in the orchard

The settlement grew around the parish church of Sant Joan Baptista, at the centre of the irrigated huerta fed from the Tibi dam, and it takes its name from that church. It became a municipality separate from Alicante in the modern period, though its territory stayed tiny. Through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the best land in the huerta was steadily bought up by Alicante's merchant and landowning class, who farmed it commercially, growing wine, almonds and produce for the city, and built residences to match their standing. The wine trade in particular, sold through the port of Alicante, paid for much of what was built.

The estates and the towers

The result is an unusual concentration of country architecture. Houses such as the Finca Villa Antonia, now owned by the municipality and used for cultural events, and the Casa del Marqués del Bosch show the neoclassical and later historicist and modernista tastes of their owners, often with a central tower, a private chapel and a formal garden. Alongside them stand older and plainer structures, the defensive towers of the huerta, built from the sixteenth century so that families and workers could shelter from corsair raids inland from the coast. Several of these towers survive within Sant Joan and the neighbouring municipalities and are protected monuments.

From huerta to residential town

In the second half of the twentieth century Sant Joan changed character. Its closeness to Alicante, good transport and a run of large public institutions turned it into a sought-after residential town, and new neighbourhoods spread across former farmland. The Hospital Universitari de Sant Joan d'Alacant sits on the boundary with Alicante, and the medical school of the Universidad Miguel Hernández occupies a campus in the municipality, so a place once known for its orchards is now also a centre for health and teaching. The historic core, the surviving fincas and a few pockets of huerta are the older layer within that commuter town.

The parish church of Sant Joan Baptista anchors the old centre, rebuilt in the eighteenth century after earlier damage. Around it the street plan of the former village is still legible, and the municipality has listed the main estates and towers to keep them from being lost to development. Sant Joan also shares the coastal custom of the Nit de l'Alba, the night of bonfires and fireworks before the June feast of Saint John, and holds its own winter Porrat around the feast of Saint Anthony.

Visiting

The old centre around the church, Finca Villa Antonia when it is open for events, its gardens and the exteriors of the protected estates and towers are the things to look for, and the almond blossom in late winter is a local marker.
