Spanish and English speakers. Just how many in the world.

Trying to get people off of writing about anything on the Help the Needy thread.
Thought I would try with my friendly reindeer's comment regarding total of speakers of Spanish or English,in this wonderful world of ours.
I will concede that Spainish is the native tongue, for more people,than what English is. But English is spoken by more than 200,000,000 people more than what Spanish is.
Also, I don't know of any person from the U:S:A: who would say that there language was American/English. I have only ever heard them say that they speak English, to me that means any spelling differences don't matter a jot, the same word comes out of the mouth.

You was so right about the use of American spelling creeping in to the English Language via things like spell checker.Bur Reindeer was actually mentioning an American/English language,I have never heard of it before and was hoping he would elaborate.

Got to admit it ,Friendly it appears American English does exist ,I bow to your superior knowledge on this subject.
I read the web-site regarding this and it does keep mentioning American English, I did lose the plot somewhat, when it kept mentioning as learning American English as a second language, because English is the first language in the U.S.A. so perhaps they are trying to get Mexican Hispanics to learn English as a second language to the Spanish, which they already have as a first language, so that on moving to the U.S.A. they will be able to communicate. I don't know but I am sure you can look it up and explain it to me.
Without trying to sound sarcastic,you may be able to teach me something new.

Alan I've just looked it up on the internet and English is spoken by 1 billion people and Spanish by 500 million, so twice as many English speaking people.
